ECU Tuning FAQ's

How much gain in power can I expect?

Up to 35% gain in bhp and torque is possible from turbocharged vehicles and less so from normally aspirated petrol vehicles. We say up to because the exact gain depends on the model of your vehicle.

You will also notice better throttle response, power delivery and generally improved drivability which can be just as beneficial as the outright gain in power.

What happens to fuel economy?

If you remap for economy you can see up to 15% gain in mpg, again it depends on your vehicle model. Noticeable gain in economy are available if you continue to drive in the same manner after the remap as you did before, if you drive more enthusiastically because the remap has made your car more drivable, you may see less benefit!

The same applies to remaps for a combination of power and economy with improved mpg due to better efficiency if driven in the same manner as pre remap.

Tuning for outright performance or for track racing etc may reduce the mpg. Surprisingly its not a given that mpg will reduce, it may remain the same or even improve depending on the state of the tuning pre remap.

Can my car by ECU tuned?

Most modern vehicles with an ECU can be tuned and cars post 1999 can be fairly easily remapped with a few exceptions. Turbo Diesels and Turbo Petrols see the biggest gains but NA petrols also benefit sufficiently in overall performance to make it worthwhile.

We have applications for Cars, SUV's, 4x4's, Light Commercials, London Taxi's and Motorhomes. Please see the application lists on the product pages to see if your car is included. If you cannot see your vehicle model please contact us and we will check for you.

What about emissions?

In most cases emissions are reduced due to your vehicle running more efficiently.

Will you change any parts?

No. ECU tuning has come a long way in recent years, remapping today is purely a software matter, so no hardware is changed or affected. Most modern vehicles can be remapped through the OBD (On Board Diagnostic) port in minutes.

The V-Box solution is a small stand alone box which is installed in the engine bay area, it works in line with the ECU and does not replace any original components. It can easily be removed without a trace leaving the vehicle factory standard.

What about emissions?

In most cases emissions are reduced due to your vehicle running more efficiently.

Will ECU Tuning damage my vehicle?

No. Rude Racing ECU tuning will not damage your vehicle. All remaps are carried out within the safe parameters of the vehicle manufacturer, this is why we do not quote ludicrously high power gains as we will not risk damage by over tuning and exceeding safe parameters. Our V-Switch & V-Box products come with a money back guarantee and the software comes with an insurance backed guarantee against damage to your vehicle.

Is ECU Tuning reversible?

Yes. Our V-Switch & V-Box products can be removed without trace and put back to the factory tune quickly and easily by you. Diesel Tuning Boxes can simply be removed returning the vehicle to standard. Full Rolling Road Remaps can also be removed professionally.

How long does it take to set up?

The V-Box can usually be installed by you within half an hour. The V-Switch initially takes a couple of hours to set up as the maps are written bespoke to your requirements. After that it takes about two minutes to switch between the maps.

Full Rolling Road Remap can take longer, usually between 2 – 4 hours depending on your requirements.

Will I have to tell my insurance company?

The responsible answer is yes. Although the remaps can be undetectable you should notify your insurance company. Insurance companies do not always increase the premium, especially if you have remapped for fuel economy. Adrian Flux is usually very fair in this area.
